CBD101: The CBD Beginner’s Guide

What is CBD (Cannabidiol)?

CBD, Cannabidiol is an organic compound that comes from the leaves, stalks, and flowers of industrial hemp or cannabis plant. It is the most widely accepted non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. CBD oil should not be confused with marijuana even though they both come from cannabis; The CBD oil contained in Pearl Holistic products is extracted from industrial hemp.

CBD oil and other hemp-extracted products are perfectly legal to be used and sold within the United States. The growing, processing, and selling of hemp extracts – including cannabinoids from industrial hemp – is possible through federal regulation within Section 7606 of the Agricultural Act of 2014 which the U.S. Congress passed and signed into law. Thanks to the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, zero THC CBD is now legal in the USA. That’s right; according to federal law, it is legal in all 50 states. That said, since the change in law is relatively new, some states might not fully embrace CBD.

What is the endocannabinoid system and how does it work?

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex arrangement of cannabinoid receptors within the brain and nervous system of humans and other mammals. These receptors regulate various functions of the body and are responsive to cannabinoids from hemp plants. The ECS affects many different body systems including but not limited to sleep, appetite, mood, pain, and memory.

What makes hemp plants different from marijuana plants?

Hemp and marijuana essentially come from the same plant family, cannabis sativa. The main difference between the two is their level of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the psychotropic cannabinoid. The Agricultural Act of 2014 describes legal hemp plants as containing less than 0.3% THC which also makes cannabinoids extracted from hemp, such as Cannabidiol (CBD) with less than 0.3%, legal as well.

What is “Broad Spectrum Extraction?”

Broad Spectrum extraction is a process that allows preservation of valuable terpenoids, essential oils, amino acids, and other beneficial cannabinoids. Pearl Holistic products successfully provides the “entourage effect” with each dose because of its use of broad spectrum extraction.

Supplements and the FDA

The FDA doesn’t regulate vitamins or supplements. It means there isn’t as much  oversight with supplements and you have to be careful about their origins. You need to understand the manufacturer’s testing and quality control measures, making sure their products are verified by an outside lab. You want to know that the product contains the advertised active ingredients and doesn’t contain impurities. It should meet label requirements, including potency. It’s not required but a good company will do these things, even if it costs more for them to produce and for the consumer to buy.
